How to pass your driving test

You will be given all the help, guidance and time you need to learn the syllabus as well as making sure that you fully understand what it means to be a responsible and safe driver.

If you have already had some previous driving experience or taken lessons previously then I will take the time to access your driving to gauge where you current skill level is at – so that you can pick up where you left off.  If you have never had any experience before then that’s also fine – we can start from the beginning.

As well as taking driving lessons with me, you could take private practice between your manual driving lessons if you have access to a manual car.  Private practice can significantly boost your chances of passing your driving test on the first attempt.  You can be supervised by anyone over the age of 21 who has held a full licence for more than 3 years.

Frequent Questions

How soon can I apply for my driving test?

I would recommend that you take a few driving lessons with an instructor before you apply for a driving test.  The average waiting time for a driving test will vary.  A good driving instructor will advise you to book a test in good time so that you are not left hanging around waiting for a test and having unnecessary driving lessons, but it is also important to be well prepared for the test.

How much do your driving lessons cost?

Driving lessons cost from £40 to £50 an hour.  During the daytime, Monday to Friday from 9am to 4pm they are £40an hour and weekday evenings are £50 an hour.

How many lessons do I need to take before I take my driving test?

Whilst there isn’t a minimum number of lessons or hours you must take before you book or sit your practical test. The DVSA says that most learners require 45 hours of driving lessons, in addition to around 20 hours of practice with a friend or family member.

Many of my pupils pass their practical in under 45 hours of tuition, as everyone has their own pace of learning.

Can I practice my driving outside of my lessons?

Yes, whilst additional practice away from your lessons isn’t essential, it is proven that learner drivers who gain experience of various situations and conditions before taking their practical test generally perform better on their test.

If you choose to practice your driving with a friend or family member you must ensure that:

  • They’re over 21
  • They’re qualified to drive the type of vehicle you want to learn in e.g. they must hold a manual licence if they’re supervising you in a manual vehicle
  • They’ve held their licence for a minimum of 3 years
  • You hold a learner driver insurance policy
